1. What is Birchwood Casey Aluminium Black used for?
It’s a chemical touch-up solution used to darken and restore scratched, worn, or bare aluminium surfaces, especially on firearm components and small metal parts.
2. How does it work?
It reacts with the aluminium surface at room temperature to create a dark grey to black finish, depending on the alloy and application.
3. Do you need heat to apply it?
No, it’s designed as a cold application product, meaning you can use it straight from the bottle without heating the metal.
4. What kind of finish does it give?
It produces a dark grey to deep black appearance that blends with existing anodised or coated aluminium surfaces.
5. Is it permanent?
It’s fairly durable for small touch-ups, but it’s still a surface treatment and can wear over time, especially on high-contact areas.
6. Can it be used on all metals?
No, it’s specifically formulated for aluminium and won’t work the same way on steel or other metals.
7. What should you do before applying it?
The surface should be thoroughly cleaned and degreased so the chemical can react evenly with the bare aluminium.
8. Can it fix deep scratches or damage?
It helps visually blend scratches and worn spots, but it doesn’t fill or structurally repair deep damage.
9. Is it used in firearms maintenance?
Yes, it’s commonly used for touching up aluminium firearm parts like receivers, accessories, and mounts.
10. Why choose Aluminium Black instead of paint?
Because it chemically reacts with the metal instead of sitting on top of it, giving a more natural-looking finish on small repairs.
