Caldwell E-Max Low Profile Behind the Neck Electronic Hearing Protection
The Caldwell E-MAX Low Profile Behind the Neck Electronic Hearing Protection is basically a lightweight, low-profile set of electronic earmuffs designed for shooters who want protection without bulky headband pressure. The behind-the-neck design keeps the top of your head clear, which works nicely with hats, helmets, or when shouldering rifles and shotguns. It uses dual microphones to amplify quiet sounds like speech and range commands, but automatically shuts off amplification when noise hits around 85 dB, protecting your hearing from gunfire. It’s rated at about 21 dB NRR, runs on AAA batteries, and includes basic features like volume control, stereo sound, and an audio input jack. It’s simple, compact, and aimed at range use rather than premium long-duration comfort or high-end acoustic clarity.
-Nathan (Technical Advisor)
The E-Max Behind-the-Head hearing protection combines great circuitry with a low profile ear cup that’s ideal for shotgun shooters and action shooters. The E-Max amplify sounds up to 20dB, controlled by the volume dial on the right ear cup. This is beneficial for normal communication, range commands, and environmental sounds.
With sounds above 85 decibels, the speakers shut off for a split second to protect the shooters hearing. Two microphones, one in each cup, give the user true stereo function and help the user to localise sound.

9. Is it good for indoor ranges?
It works, but many shooters double up with foam earplugs indoors for better protection.
