Caldwell E-MAX Low Profile Electronic Earmuffs - Slimline Ear Defenders
The Caldwell E-MAX Low Profile Electronic Earmuffs (Slimline Ear Defenders) are basically lightweight electronic hearing protection designed for the range when you want decent hearing safety without bulky ear cups getting in the way. They use built-in microphones to amplify quiet sounds like speech and range commands, but automatically cut out anything above about 85 dB to protect your hearing from gunfire. The slim, low-profile earcups are the main feature here—they’re designed so you can shoulder rifles or shotguns more comfortably without the muffs getting in the way. They’re simple, battery-powered (typically 2 AAA), and sit in that “budget but functional” category for casual shooting and range days.

The Caldwell E-MAX Low-Profile Electronic Earmuffs combines great circuitry with a low profile ear cup that's ideal for shotgun shooters and action shooters.
The two microphones in the E-Max amplify sounds below 85 decibels, which amplifies normal communication, range commands, and environmental sounds.
Above 85 decibels, the microphones shut off for a split second to protect the shooter's hearing.

1. What are these earmuffs used for?
They’re used for hearing protection at shooting ranges while still letting you hear speech and ambient sounds clearly.
2. How do they protect your hearing?
They amplify quiet sounds, but automatically shut off amplification when noise exceeds about 85 dB (like gunfire).
3. Are they good for rifles and shotguns?
Yes, the low-profile earcups are specifically designed to reduce interference when shouldering long guns.
4. What is the noise reduction rating (NRR)?
Typically around 21–23 dB depending on version, which is standard for budget electronic muffs.
5. Do they run on batteries?
Yes, they usually use 2 AAA batteries (not included).
6. Can you listen to music with them?
Yes, many versions include an audio input jack for external devices.
7. Are they comfortable for long sessions?
They’re fairly lightweight and low-profile, so they’re comfortable for casual range use, though not premium-tier padding.
8. Do they provide stereo sound?
Yes, dual microphones allow stereo sound and help with directional awareness.
9. Are they suitable for indoor shooting ranges?
They work, but many shooters prefer doubling up with foam plugs indoors for extra protection due to the moderate NRR.
10. What’s the main downside?
They’re entry-level electronics, so sound quality, build durability, and sealing aren’t as strong as higher-end brands.
