1. Can this kit be used on airguns?
Absolutely. While the kit is inspired by traditional London gunsmiths, it is perfectly suited for any wooden air rifle or air pistol stock. Whether you are restoring a vintage "springer" or protecting a modern PCP wood stock, this kit provides a professional grade finish.
2. How many gunstocks can I finish with a single kit?
Generally, there is enough material in one kit to refinish up to five complete gunstocks. This makes it a very cost effective solution for collectors or those with multiple rifles and shotguns.
3. Does the finish provide protection against the weather?
Yes. The formula is designed to seal the wood and provide a durable barrier against moisture, rain, and handling wear. It is an excellent choice for seasonal maintenance to ensure your wood doesn't "cloud" or water mark when used in the field.
4. Do I need to strip the old finish off first?
For a full restoration or to repair deep damage, it is best to remove old varnish or heavy oil finishes. However, the kit can also be used for occasional "top-ups" to enhance a dull finish and restore a rich, professional sheen without a total strip-down.
5. Is this kit suitable for both Walnut and Beech stocks?
Yes, it is developed for use on all types of wooden gunstocks. The finish contains subtle colorants designed to enhance the natural grain of the wood, bringing out a deep, traditional "London" glow on both light and dark woods.
6. How long does the process take?
The initial coats are absorbed quickly, but it is recommended to allow 1–2 hours of hardening time between subsequent coats. For the best results, the grain sealer should be left to harden overnight before you begin building up the final finish.
7. What happens if I run out of one specific item in the kit?
You don’t need to buy a whole new kit. Individual components such as the Gun Stock Finish, Grain Sealer, or Rubbing Oil are available separately, so you can easily replenish your wooden storage box as needed.
8. Is it difficult to achieve a professional result at home?
Not at all. The kit was designed to bring "master gunmaker" results to the everyday user. It includes step by step instructions and all the necessary applicators and abrasives to guide you through the process from preparation to the final polish.
9. Can I use this to fix small dents or bruises?
Yes. The instructions included with the kit provide tips on how to use boiling water to "swell" the grain, helping to lift small indentations and bruises before you apply the new finish.
10. Are there any safety precautions I should take?
Because the kit contains linseed-based products, any cloths or pads used should be disposed of carefully (either burned or laid flat to dry in a well-ventilated area) to avoid the risk of self combustion, which is a standard precaution for high-quality wood oils.
