Caldwell Lead Sled DFT 2 Rifle Shooting Rest Heavy Duty Bench Rest
Precision rifle shooting rest with weight tray – heavy duty bench support
The Caldwell Lead Sled DFT 2 is a heavy-duty precision shooting rest designed to provide maximum stability and recoil reduction when zeroing rifles or performing accuracy testing at the range.
Built around Caldwell’s Dual Frame Technology (DFT), the rest disperses recoil energy across a rigid steel frame while keeping the rifle securely supported in both the front cradle and rear support. This helps maintain consistent positioning shot after shot.
A baffled weight tray allows the rest to be loaded with up to 100 lb (45 kg) of lead shot or sand, dramatically increasing stability and helping absorb recoil during firing.
The sled itself weighs around 24 lb (10.9 kg) and sits on a wide steel base measuring 30" × 12", giving it excellent stability on shooting benches.
Fine adjustments are made using large elevation and windage controls, allowing shooters to make precise corrections while remaining behind the rifle.
Caldwell Lead Sled DFT 2 Rifle Shooting Rest Features
Dual frame design disperses recoil energy even better than the original Lead Sled
Dual frame alignment system adjusts 22 to fit rifles and shotguns of virtually any size
Extremely fine windage and elevation adjustments with finger tip control
Improved weight dispersion through our unique baffle and tray system
Stay in optimal shooting position by making elevation corrections using the rear elevation collar
Prevent stock shift between shots with the stock-stabilizer rear bag
Multi-surface rear foot provides correct contact on all shooting surfaces
What is the Caldwell Lead Sled DFT 2 used for?
The Lead Sled DFT 2 is designed to provide a stable, recoil-reducing platform for rifle shooting from a bench.
Typical uses include:
-
Zeroing rifle scopes
-
Load development and ammunition testing
-
Benchrest shooting
-
Testing rifle accuracy at the range
-
Managing recoil from powerful rifles
By stabilising the rifle and reducing movement, it helps shooters produce more consistent shot placement during testing or setup.
What does “DFT” mean?
DFT stands for Dual Frame Technology.
This design uses two parallel steel frame rails which distribute recoil forces across the rest rather than concentrating them in one area. The result is:
-
improved stability
-
reduced stress on the rest
-
better recoil management
How does the Lead Sled reduce recoil?
The sled reduces recoil in two ways:
-
Heavy steel construction helps absorb energy.
-
The weight tray can be loaded with up to 100 lb (45 kg) of sand or shot.
The additional weight increases mass and resistance to movement, which reduces the felt recoil and helps keep the rifle stable during firing.
Do I need to add weight to the rest?
The rest weighs around 24 lb (10.9 kg) on its own, so it is already stable.
However, many shooters add sandbags or lead shot to the weight tray when shooting higher-recoil rifles. This increases stability and helps prevent the rest from moving on the bench.
What rifles can the Lead Sled DFT 2 be used with?
The adjustable frame allows it to accommodate a wide range of rifles and shotguns, including:
-
Air rifles
-
Rimfire rifles
-
Centre-fire rifles
-
Hunting rifles
-
Precision rifles
The adjustable rear support allows different stock lengths and shapes to be accommodated.
Is the Lead Sled suitable for air rifles?
Yes. While it is commonly used with centre-fire rifles, it also works very well for air rifle zeroing and accuracy testing because it provides a highly stable shooting platform.
Many shooters use it when setting up new scopes or testing pellet performance.
How are elevation and windage adjusted?
The rest features precision adjustment controls which allow the shooter to move the rifle slightly in elevation and windage while keeping the rest stationary.
This allows very fine adjustments to be made during zeroing or target shooting without needing to reposition the entire rest.
Can the Lead Sled damage a rifle?
When used correctly the Lead Sled is safe for rifles.
As with any shooting rest, the rifle should be positioned correctly so that recoil can move naturally within the padded supports rather than being rigidly clamped.
Many shooters also avoid adding excessive weight when using lightweight rifles.
Why use a shooting rest instead of shooting bags?
Both systems have advantages.
Shooting bags
-
lightweight and portable
-
flexible positioning
Lead Sled style rests
-
much greater stability
-
recoil reduction
-
fine aiming adjustments
-
ideal for precision setup work
Because of this, many shooters use bags for general shooting and a heavy shooting rest when zeroing rifles or testing ammunition.
Is this rest portable?
The Lead Sled DFT 2 is designed primarily for bench use at the range rather than field use.
At around 24 lb (10.9 kg) before additional weight is added, it prioritises stability rather than portability.
What can the weight tray be filled with?
Shooters typically use:
-
sandbags
-
lead shot
-
barbell plates
-
other dense materials
The tray is designed to hold up to 100 lb (45 kg) of additional weight.
Does the rest include shooting bags?
No. The Lead Sled DFT 2 uses integrated padded front and rear supports rather than removable sandbags.
