SFP vs FFP: Which Is Right for You?
SFP (Second Focal Plane):
-
Reticle size stays the same at all magnification levels
-
Ideal for benchrest, target shooting, and hunting where distances are known
-
Reticle is easier to see at lower zoom levels
-
Holdover marks are only accurate at a specific magnification (usually maximum)
-
Simpler and more intuitive for general shooting
-
Typically more affordable
FFP (First Focal Plane):
-
Reticle size increases or decreases with zoom
-
Best for tactical shooting, long-range precision, or dynamic distance changes
-
Reticle can appear small at low magnification
-
Holdover marks remain accurate across all zoom levels
-
Preferred by advanced users familiar with quick ranging or holdovers
-
Usually more expensive due to complex design
In summary:
If you want consistent reticle visibility and shoot at known distances, an SFP scope like the Sightron SIII 10-50x60 is ideal. If you regularly adjust magnification and rely on holdovers or ranging at different distances, FFP may suit you better.
